Time vs. Money: Pancake Breakfast
I don’t know what your family does for holiday weekends, but mine makes pancakes! Memorial day, Fourth of July and Labor Day will all find us gathered around a big ol’ stack of pancake goodness out on the porch. With the holiday weekend that just passed, pancakes have been on my mind.
Growing up, our Grandma always used Bisquick to make pancakes. And now, that’s pretty much what we use when we get together. However, at home, I’ve started making my pancakes from scratch. It only takes a few ingredients I could almost guarantee that you already have in your pantry, like flour, sugar, and oil. And it barely takes any longer than using a baking mix. Personally, I like the recipe in the Better Homes & Gardens Cookbook.
So not only do you save money by not having to buy a product like Bisquick, you also avoid the additives. Because like I’ve said before, why eat extra stuff in your food (like “Partially Hydrongenated Soybean and/or Cottonseed Oil”) when you don’t have to? And don’t even get me started on all the weird stuff in those “shake and pour” mixes…
If you prefer the convenience of having all the ingredients pre-mixed so there’s less to mess with when you get up in the morning, just mix the dry ingredients ahead of time. It’s as easy as that!

I heart pancakes! esp. with real maple syrup. It’s a good tradition.
Would be even better if we lined up the electric frying pan at the table to serve hot off the griddle, so we could enjoy hanging out with the cook too, like we used to when we were little! It seemed so much more like an event than a meal.
I read the label on the syrup at the store and almost dropped it! yuck!
